Quantum of Solace - A Review

James Bond sets on a mission to find out who is responsible for the death of his love in the sequel to Casino Royale. Daniel Craig reprises his role as the British agent and has a more accomplished role than in his previous outing. The character was very quiet and subtle but here he is more open and upfront. This is the finest point of the film as the character is developing and viewers get to see the darker side of the hero and as this is a predecessor to all other Bonds, it shapes the character in exactly the right way. The heart of the film is Bond's emotional journey as he comes to terms with the death of Vesper and therefore it feels less consequential than other Bond films where Bond is a key player in a wide reaching plan and plot. Action sequences are shot in a similar way to 'Paul Greengrass's' 'Bourne' films, and the comparisons are inevitable. They do work though, and are well conceived and shot. 'Daniel Craig' delivers a solid performance again, as in 'Casino Royale' this is his film; he is a primeval force that pushes the film forward. This is of course personal taste.

Kurylenko is a fantastic Bond girl. She looks the part, worn down by her past and carrying her own agenda. She is dark, feisty and mysterious, a great combination and has some great onscreen moments with Bond, just watch out for a great boat chase. The concept of the series has changed too. There is no gigantic laser orbiting in space or evil megalomaniac genius watching the world burn from his stronghold. The evil comes slowly and in this movie, it's just the tip of then iceberg. A networking evil, impersonated by people who are dangerous because they're intelligent, ruthless and not alone. Future instalments will almost certainly reveal more of this.

Picking up almost immediately from where Casino Royale left off, Bond has captured Mr. White (Jesper Christiansen) and brought him in for questioning by Bond's superior, M (Judi Dench, once again). What Bond and M quickly discover is that the organization that White works for, known as Quantum, has far ranging influence and are using their powers to topple governments in order to gain a foothold wherever they deem financial lucrative for them. Bond follows clues that lead him to Dominic Greene (Mathieu Amalric), a key player in Quantum, who is helping to destabilize the government of Boliva in order to install a dictator, General Medrano (Joaquin Cosio), to allow them to control a valuable natural resource. Accompanying Bond on his mission is Camille (Olga Kurylenko), who has a personal score to settle with Medrano, while Bond is also set on revenge for the death of his love from Casino Royale, Vesper Lynd.

Bond fans will be pleased with the action sequences as Casino Royale lacked in that area. Here we have cars, planes, boats and on foot chases all generating that action styled feeling that the Bond franchise does so well. However the early action sequences, specifically the opening car chase scene, is poorly directed. The fast montage does not do the car chase any justice. There are 1 second shots showing brief glimpses of vehicles and characters and is never effectively established. The feeling is there, but without a clear cut picture it is hard to get a proper view of the sequence. The producers have taken a big risk with this film. More casual viewers who sit back with a bucket of popcorn and expect to be entertained while switching off their brains will not be pleased. The film expects you to understand Casino Royale and for you to engage. It's smart and rewarding but very, very, different.

8.3/10

The passenger in the Alpha Romeo shots at Bond, Bond ducks down from the bullets and picks up a machine gun and shots the driver of the Romeo where it then crashes over the side of the windy roads. Bond (Daniel Craig) then continues to drive on in to the streets of Siena, Italy down a long dark tunnel where he drives half way down and stops gets out and opens the trunk, Where he tells Mr. White (Jesper Christensen) is laying, Bond then says 'We are here'. The camera then changes down to a underground dungeon below the race track. Bond then drags Mr. White onto a seat and says "Do bleed to death" then he walks of to M, A agent in the room with them says he will go and search the premeter, M says ok Mitchell. He later returns before the interogation begins. M (Judi Dench) then tells him that he in not in Britian and he wont be for a long time unless he tells them what they need to know. Mr White chuckles and says you don't know anything about us. He then says the first thing you should know about us is that we have people everywhere, "Am I right ?" then the agent (Mitchell) in the room with them, Grabs his gun and shots the other guards around M and Bond, Then aims for Bond and M and shots, Hitting Mr. White, But this cannot be confirmed. Bond chases Mitchell (Glenn Foster) down sewers under the Siena streets turning when he reaches locked gates and large pipes where he must jump over. The scene then changes to see people feet standing in the race arena above where a paving slab on the floor then moves and Bond (Daniel Craig) appears from. He then stands up and chases after Mitchell through the very compact crowd. During this process an innocent bystander gets shot. The agent in his lust to get away and killing Bond then turns to shoot Bond and misses and hits an innocent women next to him, She falls down, The scene later goes on to her again [Unkown if she is dead]. They then find them selves out of the crowds and Mitchell then gets away up on to the roofs of the old houses [Got to the roofs through a bell tower stairs. Bond persues him and chases after him, The chase continues and they try shooting each other at certain stages. Mitchell then trys to shoot Bond again but Bond is faster and he pushes him into a large circular window on the top of a constructed building [Seen in Theratical trailer]. They both fall through it with glass landing on him. They both hit crates stacked at different levels, They fall of them and land even further down on ropes when they both get a little tangled, Bond drops his gun and it falls to the floor, The agent then tries to shoot Bond but he swings over on his rope and hits it out of his hand where it then falls on the surface of one of the stakes. Bond tries to get his gun strugling because his rope is now hung a few feet of the ground level where his gun is, Michael then tries to get his gun which is on top of a crate, They both get there guns but Bond hangs on his rope and turns at him and shoots him dead [Not seen him dead].

The scene changes to London [The location appears on the screen where they are each time. In different styles to match the location where they are.] Bond is driven up to the door of an apartment where he walks in up to one of the top levels into a room where he sees a forensic team working in the room and M standing at the balcony area. M then says 'He has worked for us for 8 years, As my bodyguard ... He had passed each test we have given him in that time, Lie tests ... Interviews" .... "How can this organisation be every where and we know nothing about them?". She then goes on to tell him that he shouldn't be motivated by revenge, He replies, "You don't need to worry about me". Bond soon finds himself heading to find the next lead to find out more about the organisation [A hotel] he heads up the stairs a room, Where he uses something to open the door [Cannot be seen what it is], He enters the room which appears emtpy, The shot changes to someone flicking a knife open, Bond keeps walking, Then out of some double swinging doors, A man jumps out and tries to attack Bond, Bond fights back, Hitting each other and forcing each other into walls. Bond outmanovers him and stabs him in the leg, The man is thrown onto the outside of the hotel room where Bond is lying next to him, The man was is injured in his next and blood is dripping down him neck, He dies. Bond searchs through his wardwobe and finds a shirt which he rips the arm of and covers up a wound on his arm, He puts his jacket on to conceal it. When he walks down into the hotel reception with the room keys and is heading towards the door, When he turns and heads back to the reception desk and asks if he has any messages, The recptionist says no but we have a breifcase we have been holding for you, Do you want it now ?, Bond takes the case and leaves the hotel, Outside a hydrogen powered Ford KA arrives outside with Camille (Olga Kurylenko) at the wheel, She tells him to get in and he does. They drive down the road where she notices that there is a bike tailing them. She says is it a friend of yours Bond replies "I dont have any friends". She then loses him down a alleyway. She then tells Bond to open the case, He opens it and gives her some paperwork, He then lifts up a compartment in the case, Containing a picture of Camille and a gun. Bond says I think someone wants to kill you. She has a gun out of nowhere and goes to shot Bond. Bond stops her and she tells him to get out. He gets out.

Bond with Agent fields at a Green Peace meeting.. Quantum Of Solace © 2008, United Artists Corporation and Danjaq, All rights reserved.

The film then continues to see the villian of the film, Dominic Greene the head of the organistation Bond later finds out is called 'Quantum'. Bond soon finds out that Dominic Greene is doing deals with major countries for oil, Dominic purcases a large desert from a Bolivian superior, Which doesn't contain any oil which he has promised many countries, But instead water dams causing draught in the area. Bond meets up with Mathis later in the film, After 'M' has put a stop on his credit cards and passports so he is unable to leave the country. Bond meets up with Mathis at his villa [Which is given to him by the British goverment after they found he was innocent for the case of helping Le Chiffre in Casino Royale, The prediasesor film], Mathis later dies in the film being shot down by police, He dies in Bonds arm. Bond lays Mathis down in a rubbish bin, Camille who is with him says is that how you treat your friends. He replies says he couldn't care [Mathis would mind]. Bond later catchs up in Chile at Dominic Greene's HQ in the middle of a Chilliean desert, Where Camille has a score to settle with General Medrano (Joaquin Cosío). Bond and Dominic later have a fight in the HQ when it is being exploded through the hydrogen powered station based apon the walls. Bond leaves Dominic in the middle of a desert after interogating him and finding everything out about the QUANTUM organisation. At the end of the film Bond is waiting in a Vesper's (Eva Green) boyfriends appartement, A few seconds later, Me enters with a girl, they turn on the light, Bond is standing there aiming a gun at him, He orders him to sit down on the sofa behind them. He tell her to leave. Bond later leaves the apartment and walks outside to see 'M' (Judi Dench), He says he isnt dead [badly hurt]. Then finally at the end of the film, The classic gunbarrel starts with James Bond 'Daniel Craig' walking in then he turns and shots, The Bond theme then kicks in. [Craig walks in particually fast]

Verdict
Lots of action, Very powerful organisation, Shows a few refrences to past films such as Walking along the desert [The Spy Who Loved Me], In Goldfinger in 1964 Shirley Eaton was covered in gold paint by the villianous Auric Goldfinger, In this film, Bond returns to his room to find it full of of MI6 agents he walks in his room which he was in with earlier with Agent Fields to find her covered in crude oil head to toe in the smae postision Jill Masterson was in Goldfinger. A very very good scene is the Opera scene, That is one of the best throughout the franchise completly. Highly Recommended film.

Ratings
Music: 8/10
Characters: 10/10
Action: 9/10

Overall Rating, 8/10, Recommended, One of the best Bond films yet. The only problem is it was too short.
